2024 Main Library Renovation

In 2018, the community united to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Main Library and launched a $1.8 million capital campaign aimed at renovating and revitalizing this vital public resource. Designed by renowned architect Edward Durell Stone, Main Library is recognized as a Local Historic Landmark and is a contributing property to the Davenport Downtown Commercial Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The first phase of the renovation has led to improved accessibility, the establishment of dedicated study rooms, expanded meeting spaces, comfortable seating with charging stations, upgraded HVAC systems, renovated restrooms, and the introduction of the Library's first makerspace, Studio 321!

In October 2024, we commenced the second phase of the project, which includes the following enhancements:

  • Relocating the handicap ramp from the corner of the building to the main entrance to improve accessibility.
  • Removing the zigzag fencing installed in the 1990s and replacing it with a new decorative fence.
  • Repairing the concrete on the porch, including the removal of the "pebbled" concrete that poses challenges for wheelchair access, and addressing repairs on the loading ramp.
  • Installing a new bike rack (designed by West High School welding students!) closer to the entrance.
  • Creating a designated area for a future art sculpture.
  • Installing a street sign at the intersection of Main Street and 4th Street, as well as a "Davenport Public Library" sign on the concrete wall.
  • Enhancing the landscaping around the facility.
  • Constructing walls and doors to enclose the makerspace and the children's area on the first floor.
  • Establishing walls and doors to create a dedicated space on the second floor for relocating the Richardson-Sloane Special Collections Center!

We anticipate that construction will continue through Spring 2025, although the main entrance should open again by mid-November.

11/13/24 UPDATE: The front entrance should be open by the end of November.

11/20/24 UPDATE: The front entrance is open! There is some fencing and temporary wood railing in place as we await delivery of the permanent metal handrails.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding.
